Recreating Zimmerit Patterns with the Tamiya 35187

The Tamiya 35187 1/35 Zimmerit Coating Applicator offers modellers a practical solution for reproducing the anti-magnetic Zimmerit finish used on German vehicles in WWII. It streamlines adding believable texture to 1/35 scale models for a more faithful presentation.

Historical Note and Modelling Value

Zimmerit was a textured coating applied during World War II to prevent magnetic mines from sticking to armoured vehicles. Replicating that surface is important for historically accurate models and can influence how paint and weathering settle on the kit.

What You Get and How to Use It

The pack includes six precision metal saw blades intended for vertical armour surfaces, with lengths from 1" to 2" (2.5cm to 4.5cm) to accommodate different panel sizes. The applicator handle is not included and is available separately as No. 74018. An instruction sheet provides step-by-step guidance on applying the coating and maintaining the blades.

Use a modelling putty or paste that matches the texture and cures firm. Apply to the panel, then run the blade over it while the material is still workable for best texture definition.
Yes - once the textured layer has fully cured and been primed, you can paint and weather it like any other surface. Take care when sanding not to remove the texture.
The applicator handle is sold separately as item No. 74018. Check official Tamiya retailers or spares listings to purchase the handle that fits these blades.
