The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII was an evolutionary step from the Mk.V, featuring an enlarged rudder, the Merlin 60 series engine, and a retractable tail wheel assembly. Entering operational service around mid 1943, it was deployed in theatres such as the Mediterranean and Pacific and matched up against fighters including the Luftwaffe and the Japanese Zero.
This 1/32 scale Tamiya kit reproduces the Mk.VIII with accurate panel definition and rivet work. The set contains parts for extended wingtips and allows the landing gear to be shown stowed or down via magnetic fittings, plus a display stand for airborne displays.
The kit replicates the aircrafts armament layout of two 20mm cannons and four 7.7mm machine guns, and models the Rolls Royce Merlin engine with removable cowlings exposing oil tanks and supercharger components. Movable elevators and ailerons increase realism, and optional drop tanks are supplied for alternate mission looks.
