Mechanical Turtle Robocraft Kit Overview

The Tamiya Mechanical Turtle is a compact Robocraft kit that demonstrates simple mechanical motion with a four-leg crawler. Its design reproduces a turtle-like gait and is useful for learning about linkages and gearing.

Movement Mechanism

Rotation from the motor is passed through crank plates to the legs, creating a crawling motion. Front and rear legs come as single moulded parts, and the front leg plate articulates on a ball joint to mirror natural stepping. Transparent body elements provide a technical, see-through finish.

Assembly Details

The package contains the body, leg components, motor, gearbox, switch and screws for assembly. The build uses both screws and snap-fit parts to strike a balance between strength and ease of assembly. Cable ends are rubber capped and marked for simple wiring.

Control and Running

The clear switch with green transparent parts allows forward and reverse drive while enhancing the styling. Operate the model on firm, level surfaces to ensure consistent movement and avoid surfaces that increase drag.

Specifications

  • Total length: 166mm
  • Total weight: 95g (excluding batteries)
  • Body material: ABS resin
  • Includes gearbox, motor, and reverse switch
  • Requires one R04/AAA/UM4 battery (sold separately)
  • Continuous running time with an alkaline battery: 1 hour
Spare parts for common wear items such as gears and plastic linkages can be sourced from hobby retailers or Tamiya parts lists. Check compatibility before ordering replacements.
Assembly time varies with experience but typically takes around 1 to 2 hours for a careful build, including wiring and checks.
With a fresh alkaline R04/AAA battery you should see approximately one hour of continuous operation, though runtime will vary with battery condition and load.
