Detailed Look at the Hobby Boss 83816 Sd.Kfz.222

The Leichter Panzerspahwagen Sd.Kfz.222 served from 1935 until 1944 as a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle, featuring a distinct sloped body and turret built on the Horch 801 chassis. The rear-mounted 90 hp engine allowed roughly 80 km/h on paved roads and around 40 km/h cross country. Its road performance was an asset in Western Europe but it was less capable in the demanding conditions of the Eastern Front and North Africa, leading to use of the Sdkfz 250 half-track in many roles.

The Hobby Boss 1/35 kit aims to recreate these characteristics in miniature. The Hobby Boss 83816 - 1/35 German Sd.Kfz.222 Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle (3rd Series) supplies the components needed to build an authentic period model for display or diorama use.

Kit Composition and Detail Level

Expect over 380 plastic elements across 14 sprues, separate upper and lower hull pieces, and four rubber tyres. Three photo-etched parts are provided to sharpen external fittings, and multi-directional slide-moulded components help achieve close-fitting assemblies and reduced clean-up.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/35
  • Length: 130.5mm
  • Width: 59.3mm
  • Total Plastic Parts: 380+
  • Photo Etched Parts: 3 pieces
  • Rubber Tires: 4
Sharp sprue cutters, a fine hobby knife, sanding sticks and a precision file set are recommended to remove flash and prepare parts for a tight fit without damaging delicate photo-etched pieces.
Use subtle washes, drybrushing and pigment powders to simulate dust and wear; focus on wheels, lower hull seams and turret edges for believable operational weathering.
The instruction sheet guides assembly and parts placement, though some modellers supplement it with reference photos for fine rigging and crew stowage accuracy.
