The S-58, built on Sikorskys work, was initially ignored by military commanders. However they soon became alert to the outstanding potential with this specific unit which, in H-34 variation, would see solution with armies in 25 different countries! The final medium helicopter to utilize a piston motor ahead of the development of the turbine, the H-34 received its baptism of fire in Algeria. In Vietnam the U.S. Army preferred the H-21, but the H-34 ended up getting used extensively by the Marines.
