Scale Model of the P-38J Lightning by Italeri - 1/72 Detail

The Italeri 1/72 P-38J Lightning kit renders one of World War II's most distinctive fighters in scale. The actual P-38J relied on twin V-1710 Allison engines producing 1,425 horsepower each, which allowed cruising and maximum speeds above 660 km/h, supporting roles across both European and Pacific zones.

In model form, the central cockpit, twin booms and nose armament are faithfully suggested, echoing the real aircrafts fit of four Browning 12.7 mm machine guns plus a Hispano M2 cannon. The P-38Js combination of firepower and range made it a reliable escort and strike platform, even if its handling differed from lighter single-engine fighters.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/72
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly: Requires glue
  • Paint: Not included
  • Figure: Not included
Assembly time varies by experience, but expect several evenings for careful construction, plus additional time for painting and finishing touches.
Basic modelling tools like cutters, files, a hobby knife, and tweezers are sufficient. A fine paintbrush or airbrush and masking tape improve paintwork quality.
Pay attention to aligning the twin booms and the central fuselage; dry-fitting before gluing helps prevent misalignment and visible seams.
Thin washes to pick out panel lines, subtle chipping on leading edges, and careful decal placement will boost realism without overpowering the model.
