Italeri 1/35 Biber Midget Submarine - Historical model introduction

The Italeri 1/35 Biber kit represents one of the more unusual attempts at coastal defence in World War II. The Biber was a tiny, single-crew submarine developed by the Kriegsmarine for short-range operations close to enemy shipping lanes.

Development and operational notes

Produced from early 1944, the Biber measured around 9 metres in actual length. It offered an operational radius near 240 kilometres and a surfaced speed of about 6.5 knots. Practical setbacks and limited crew training curtailed its effectiveness in combat.

Modelling considerations and build focus

The kit captures the submarine's compact shape with clean moulding and small fittings. Builders should focus on careful trimming and alignment to preserve the slim silhouette during assembly.

Collecting and display suggestions

Completed at 1/35 scale, the model lends itself to museum-style displays or grouped naval subjects. Its distinctive appearance adds depth to any World War II collection, particularly those centred on undersea or coastal operations.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/35
  • Length: 9 meters (real-life reference)
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly: Requires glue
  • Paint: Not included
Build time varies with experience, but expect several evenings for careful assembly and painting. Small parts and finishing work tend to be the most time-consuming.
The kit aims to reproduce the Biber's key proportions and external details. For strict historical accuracy, consult reference photos and consider small aftermarket upgrades if desired.
Basic modelling tools are sufficient: sprue cutters, hobby knife, sanding sticks, tweezers and plastic cement. Fine brushes and suitable paints will help achieve a neat finish.
