Rear spring tuning guide

The Serpent 500914 rear spring is a 13mm coil spring with a 2.1lbs rate and a pink finish, produced for use in the rear (rr) position of RC-scale cars. It is used to influence ride height, initial stiffness and weight transfer behaviour during cornering and acceleration.

Compatibility guidance: appropriate where a 13mm coil spring is required for rear shock assemblies. Always confirm inner diameter and spring seat type on your shocks before assuming fitment with proprietary or custom shock components.

Installation notes: remove the shock from the chassis, compress the shock body to eliminate preload, then swap springs while noting orientation and spring seat placement. Rebuild with an initial preload that lets the spring engage the shock caps without over compressing at static ride height. Carry out short test runs and make small preload adjustments to refine handling balance.

Tuning role: fitting a 2.1lbs rear spring increases rear roll stiffness versus softer options, which can reduce rear squat and alter mid-corner balance. Use spring changes alongside damper oil viscosity and piston selection to reach the desired damping and handling characteristics.

Start with a moderate preload so the spring sits on the caps without compressing at static ride height. Increase preload in small steps while monitoring ride height and steering response.
A firmer rear spring can reduce rear squat and change load transfer, which may improve traction under acceleration but could reduce mechanical grip mid-corner depending on front setup. Test and tune incrementally.
Match spring rate with appropriate oil weight and piston size to control compression and rebound. A firmer spring often pairs well with slightly heavier oil or smaller piston orifices to tame movement.
