The Stridsvagn 103, referred to as the S-Tank, was unique for its turretless, low-profile layout. Around 300 vehicles entered service from the 1960s. The 103C upgrade programme beginning in 1986 introduced an enhanced fire-control system, a Detroit Diesel replacement engine, laser rangefinder functionality and further armour improvements applied in later updates. The model was eventually retired in favour of newer main battle tanks by the late 1990s.
