Tamiya 14090 review: Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 (GSX1300R) in 1/12 scale

The Suzuki Hayabusa has been a standout sportbike since 1998 thanks to its combination of speed and distinctive styling. Tamiya's 1/12 kit reproduces the bike's presence in miniature, offering a satisfying build for enthusiasts and display collectors.

A faithful reproduction of the original

With a real-world output near 175hp and a streamlined fairing, the Hayabusa's defining elements are well represented in this kit. The unique cowling shape and twin headlamp arrangement are modelled to reflect the original machine's appearance.

Parts, fit and finish

The finished model measures 178mm in length and 71mm across, mirroring the real bike's proportions. The upper cowling and fuel tank come as one moulded piece to preserve the correct lines. Screws secure the engine, cowling and swing arms to the frame for a robust assembly, and rubber tyres lend a realistic touch to the complete model.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/12
  • Overall Length: 178mm
  • Overall Width: 71mm
  • Material: Plastic with rubber tires
  • Assembly: Screw attachment for key components
No additional major parts are required. The kit includes the necessary plastic components, screws and decals, though you may choose extra paints or aftermarket detail items.
Some parts benefit from pre-painting for a cleaner finish. Painting the body panels before final assembly can produce the best result, especially when using masking for multi-colour schemes.
The screw-mounted engine and swing arms provide a sturdy build. With careful handling and proper finishing, the completed model is robust enough for display and occasional handling.
