The I-400 was designed as a submersible aircraft carrier capable of carrying three Seiran fighters in a special hangar. At roughly 122 metres long and with a submerged displacement of 6,560 tons, it ranked as the largest submarine class of its time. The vessel was engineered for extended operations with significant range.
Completed in December 1944, the I-400 series did not see combat before the end of World War II, yet its design has been noted for its forward-thinking approach to long-range submarine capability.
Tamiya's 1/350 rendition presents the I-400s hangar and external fittings with precise moulding. Clear parts enable the Seiran aircraft to be shown inside the hangar tube, offering modelmakers the choice to display internal storage.
Photo-etched pieces are provided to reproduce fine details such as handrails and the crane arm, alongside four metal torpedoes and transparent canopy parts for the Seiran. The kit also contains forty-eight 1/350 scale figures to populate the scene.
