The Tamiya 1/700 Japanese Aircraft Carrier Shinano kit recreates a historically important but briefly serving warship. Converted from a Yamato-class battleship hull into an aircraft carrier, Shinano offers a compelling subject for historical model builds.
Commissioned in November 1944, Shinano measured approximately 266 metres with a displacement of about 62,000 tons. Despite heavy protection, including a reinforced flight deck intended to resist large bombs, she was sunk by an American submarine only days after entering service.
The kit faithfully renders the hull profile and hangar layout beneath the flight deck, echoing the design cues of Yamato and Musashi. Builders can present the forward and aft elevator platforms in raised or lowered positions to vary the final look.
Supplied with 32 aircraft such as Ryusei models, moulded in clear plastic for accurate cockpit finishing, the kit also includes a detailed bridge, sloped funnel and defensive armaments including rocket launchers and AA guns. It is suitable for collectors aiming for a museum-style finish.
