The Mikuma, a member of the Mogami class completed in 1935 and later refitted with heavier guns, took part in notable early war operations including landings and the Sunda Strait action before being lost after Midway. It remains a popular subject for naval model builders.
Tamiya's engineering renders the Mikuma's hull form and superstructure with high fidelity. Components such as gun turrets and torpedo launchers are replicated with crisp moulding, and the turret design uses polycaps so they can rotate after assembly.
The hull splits into two halves to ensure correct alignment, while features like the rear mast and main superstructure are carefully modelled. The kit provides a satisfying assembly that rewards careful painting and finishing techniques.
