Shimakaze was notable in World War II for exceptional speed, reaching around 40.9 knots. She used steam turbines producing 75,000 horsepower and was fitted with unique quintuple torpedo launchers. Though planned as the first of a 16 ship series, she remained a single prototype and was sunk in the Battle of Ormoc Bay in November 1944.
Tamiya's 1/700 model offers a faithful representation of the Shimakaze. First issued in 1972 and refreshed in 2017, the kit benefits from modern references and updated moulding for improved assembly and detail fidelity.
