Tamiya 31460 presents the 1/700 Shimakaze for scale enthusiasts

Shimakaze was notable in World War II for exceptional speed, reaching around 40.9 knots. She used steam turbines producing 75,000 horsepower and was fitted with unique quintuple torpedo launchers. Though planned as the first of a 16 ship series, she remained a single prototype and was sunk in the Battle of Ormoc Bay in November 1944.

Historical detail packaged for careful modelling

Tamiya's 1/700 model offers a faithful representation of the Shimakaze. First issued in 1972 and refreshed in 2017, the kit benefits from modern references and updated moulding for improved assembly and detail fidelity.

Key Features of the Model Kit

  • Two-piece hull reproduces the vessel's narrow lines accurately.
  • Deck mouldings include fine fixtures and anchor chain representation.
  • Slide-mould twin turrets give precise form and poly caps allow rotation of main guns and torpedo mounts.
  • Decals supplied to recreate linoleum deck sections and ship markings.
  • Kit is intended to be completed at the waterline, suitable for ocean or harbour dioramas.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/700
  • Length: 185mm
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly: Required
  • Paint: Required
Basic modelling tools like sprue cutters, files, hobby knife, tweezers and fine brushes are sufficient. A magnifier and fine sanding sticks will help with small parts.
Apply the provided decals for linoleum patterns, then seal with a satin or matt varnish. Subtle weathering washes can add realistic wear without obscuring markings.
Check hull halves for flash and alignment before gluing. Dry fit decks and superstructure components to ensure clean joins and reduce sanding later.
