The USS Missouri exemplifies the capabilities of the Iowa class battleships, entering service in mid 1944. She served across the Pacific campaign and her deck hosted the formal Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945.
The Iowa class, including BB-61 Iowa and BB-62 New Jersey, combined high speed with heavy main armament, fielding 40.6cm guns and reaching speeds near 33 knots. Missouri received a major modernisation in 1986 with new electronics and weapons systems and remained active until her 1993 retirement.
Tamiya's 1/700 kit recreates the ship's slim hull geometry and superstructure detail. It features rotating main turrets and carefully modelled armaments including 40mm and 20mm guns, and supplies parts for two types of floatplanes: Vought OS2U Kingfishers and Curtiss SC-1 Seahawks.
The Battleship Missouri memorial provides useful reference for paint, markings and deck fittings. Tamiya consulted historical sources to reproduce the ship's appearance for accurate scale modelling.
