Tamiya 31712 1/700 USS Yorktown CV-5 - kit introduction

The USS Yorktown (CV-5) was commissioned in 1937 and became an important U.S. carrier in early Pacific operations. Serving as Task Force 17's flagship, she fought at Coral Sea and Midway. Despite being fatally wounded in action, Yorktown's operational history is a key chapter in carrier warfare studies.

Recreating Yorktown for a Midway display

This Tamiya 1/700 kit reproduces the carrier's Midway appearance with precise moulding and scale detail. It is intended for modellers who want an accurate representation, with options for hangar door positioning and a functioning stern elevator for lifelike presentations.

Aircraft and Detailing Options

The kit contains parts for the carrier air group, such as F4F Wildcats, the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless and the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator, allowing for a detailed flight deck tableau.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/700
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly Type: Glue required
  • Features: Movable elevator, optional hanger door positions
Build time varies with experience and finish. Allow several evenings for assembly, plus extra time for painting and weathering to achieve a museum-quality result.
The aircraft parts are scaled to match the 1/700 representation and provide recognisable silhouettes for deck scenes; some modellers refine shapes with aftermarket upgrades if greater fidelity is required.
Subtle deck wear, light chipping and exhaust staining often work well for a Midway-era carrier. Use washes and dry-brushing to bring out panel lines and deck detail without overwhelming the model.
This kit focuses on the ship and aircraft; crew figures are not typically included. Many modellers add aftermarket or scratch-built figures to enliven deck scenes.
