The Komatsu G40 was developed for the Japanese Navy in World War II to assist with rapid airfield construction and infrastructure tasks. As Japan's first domestically produced bulldozer it marked an important technical achievement. Production totalled 148 machines, but wartime disruptions meant few reached their assigned projects. One G40 survives and is exhibited at the Komatsu Techo Center in Shizuka; it was registered as a Mechanical Engineering Heritage item by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2007.
Tamiya's 1/48 rendition accurately conveys the G40's profile and component layout. The kit presents detailed hydraulic lines and supplies a metal transfer for the IJN emblem on the grille. It is well suited to modellers who appreciate neat assembly and period correct finishing.
