The P40 represents Italy's sole heavy tank programme during World War II and stands out for its solid, riveted construction. The designation combines Pesante, Italian for heavy, and the year 1940. The vehicle used bogey-style road wheels and a leaf spring suspension layout, sharing certain construction traits with the earlier Carro Armato M13/40.
Fitted with a 75mm main gun plus an 8mm Breda machine gun, the P40 was driven by a 330hp V12 diesel motor. Designers adopted sloped armour after encountering the Soviet T-34. While an order around 1,200 vehicles was placed, only a fraction reached completion before the 1943 armistice. Those completed saw limited service in northern theatres and in Yugoslavia until the conflict ended.
The Italeri 1/35 scale kit renders the P40s riveted hull, sloped armour and detailed leaf spring suspension faithfully. It uses assembly type tracks and includes photo-etched parts for fine items such as exhaust guards and fender stays to enhance authenticity. The decal options number three, covering a Fiat Ansaldo prototype and examples used by German forces.
