The Tamiya 35163 1/35 Type 61 kit recreates a notable piece of Japan's armoured fleet in miniature. The model highlights the compact chassis and turret arrangement that served the Ground Self Defense Force, together with the 90mm main gun that defined the vehicle's combat role.
Introduced in 1961, the Type 61 formed part of Japan's Cold War defensive posture. It combined mobility and firepower, using a 90mm gun inspired by the U.S. M3A1. The platform was later superseded by the Type 74 and Type 90, while its Mitsubishi V-12 diesel produced around 570 hp and enabled a practical top speed of about 45 km/h.
Model builders will find the kit accurately renders the cast turret and various external fittings. The torsion-bar suspension and auxiliary weapon mounts offer scope for careful assembly and weathering techniques to bring out surface detail and realistic wear.
As a display model, the finished Type 61 works well in collections focused on post-war armoured development. Its accurate silhouette and components make it a useful addition for modellers interested in Japanese military vehicles.
