The Tamiya 1/35 German 38cm Assault Mortar Sturmtiger model reproduces the imposing lines of a rare WWII assault vehicle. Constructed on a Tiger I chassis and armed with a 38cm mortar, the original was intended to batter fortified defences.

Historical notes and operational use

Introduced in concept from August 1943, the Sturmtiger employed the short L/5.4 RW61 mortar, a naval-derived weapon adapted for land assaults. The heavy Tiger I hull was utilised to handle recoil reaching approximately 40 tons. Converting existing hulls allowed ongoing tank production to continue. Armour thickness included about 150mm at the front and 80mm on the flanks.

Kit composition and assembly overview

The Tamiya kit contains finely moulded plastic parts in light brown and black, a crew figure, realistic track detail and interior and exterior fittings. The set also supplies an ammunition rack, 38cm rockets and a loading crane. Waterslide decals and clear building instructions are included; glue and paint must be purchased separately.
