The Sturmgeschutz III Ausf. B served as a low-profile assault gun derived from the Panzer III chassis. Its fixed L24 75mm short gun and turret-less layout reduced silhouette and manufacturing complexity, making it useful in both infantry support and anti-armour tasks.
From June 1940 the Ausf. B entered production as the first widely produced version, with 250 units completed. It ran on wide tracks and was powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM producing 230hp, reaching about 40km/h. It saw combat in the Balkans and on the Eastern Front during 1941. Overall StuG III production eventually passed 10,000 vehicles.
Tamiya's 1/35 rendition presents fine external and selected internal detail. The kit includes an aluminium gun barrel and a photo-etched mesh for the engine intake to enhance authenticity. Internal detail captures elements such as the loader assembly and the wireless radio.
The suspension is modelled as the swing-arm type and the kit provides three marking choices plus a commander figure for display options. The main gun can be mounted in a raised or lowered position once built, allowing diorama variation.
