The JS-2, named after Joseph Stalin, was rolled out in 1944 to strengthen Soviet heavy armour. It was conceived to counter German 88mm guns and to face heavy German tanks like the Tiger and Panther. Armed with the A-19 122mm main gun and protected by up to roughly 120mm of armour in critical zones, the JS-2 combined strong hitting power with useful protection. The Model 1944 is particularly noted for its muzzle brake and sloped front glacis plate which improved its survivability.
Tamiya's 1/35 scale JS-2 Model 1944 ChKZ kit reproduces the tank's main lines and key details, including the distinctive muzzle brake and angled glacis. Photo-etched parts are supplied to refine the engine intake grille. Builders can choose between belt-type or assembly-type tracks to match their preferred technique. The set also contains a commander figure and a loader torso, useful for adding human scale and interest to the finished model.
