Tamiya 35338 - 1/35 Toyota Model AB Phaeton: Historic Staff Car in Miniature

The Toyota Model AB Phaeton was produced in 1936 and is a notable example from Toyota's early production years after the AA. Equipped with a 3.4-liter inline-6, its styling showed American influence, and it featured a foldaway cloth roof, an adjustable front windscreen and front-hinged doors. During World War II most were converted to military use, finished in khaki and deployed as staff cars, with production numbering 353 vehicles in that timeframe.

Tamiya's 1/35 scale model of the Toyota AB Phaeton reflects those original proportions and details, informed by study of surviving cars to capture authentic shapes and fittings.

Key Modelling Points

  • Careful reproduction of the ABs rounded front grille and flowing fenders.

  • Interior includes seats, floor sections, ladder frame detail and engine underside representation.
  • Auxiliary seating can be built in either stowed or deployed configuration.
  • One driver figure is supplied to give the completed model extra presence.
Build time varies with experience and finishing. Expect several evenings to a few weekends for assembly, painting and decal application at a neat finish.
Decals are included and allow for appropriate period staff car markings consistent with the kit's historical subject.
Start with a coat of primer, then apply base colours in thin layers. Weathering washes and dry brushing bring out panel lines and surface detail for a realistic finish.
