The M109 originated with U.S. development starting in 1952 and became widely adopted internationally. The Bundeswehr's M109G variant added unique elements such as a different track design, a specific cupola, smoke dischargers and turret rear boxes. Fitting the FH70 barrel extended range to approximately 24.7 km, with this arrangement in service up to 2007.
