The P-51D Mustang emerged as a standout fighter during World War II, developed by North American Aviation under Edgar Schmued. Initial powerplants were Allison V-1710s, but the switch to the Packard V-1650-7 Merlin engine gave the P-51D superior high-altitude performance. The aircraft's armament of six .50 caliber M2 Browning guns made it a potent escort and air combat platform.
For scale enthusiasts, the P-51D combines aesthetic appeal and historical depth. It flew with the USAAF's Eighth Air Force and in many theatres of war. Tamiya captures the Mustang's aerodynamic form in 1/72 scale PS plastic, providing builders with a tidy, accurate kit for shelf display.
