The Supermarine Spitfire remains a defining WWII fighter, produced from 1936 until 1948 with more than 20,000 examples built. The Mk.V series, notably the Mk.Vb, was a mainstay of RAF units, benefiting from successive Merlin engine upgrades to meet evolving combat requirements.
Typical Mk.Vb armament paired four 7.7mm machine guns with two 20mm cannons for a robust offensive mix. Some examples received clipped wing tips to improve low level handling. For overseas service the TROP modification introduced a Vokes dust filter to protect the engine in sandy conditions, a solution later refined to reduce aerodynamic penalty.
During the war the Spitfire was constantly adapted for different roles and theatres, and it still draws interest from modellers and aviation historians for its adaptability and engineering.
