The Tamiya 1/72 Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden Type 11 Koh kit recreates a distinctive Japanese fighter of the Second World War. Originating as the Kawanishi N1K1 "Kyofu" floatplane, the design was adapted to a land-based fighter in a 1942 private project by Kawanishi Aircraft, yielding a highly manoeuvrable aircraft for its time.
The Shiden was fitted with the Nakajima Homare engine, which required a large propeller and led engineers to employ telescopic landing gear to clear the mid-wing arrangement. Although there were persistent issues with undercarriage and engine reliability, production totalled about 1,000 aircraft deployed to the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa and operations over Honshu.
For enthusiasts, this kit provides a concise yet rewarding build that reflects wartime engineering choices. Tamiya's moulding quality and part layout support accurate assembly, while the finished model makes an informative display piece highlighting Pacific theatre aviation design.
