The Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien, known to Allied crews as "Tony", entered service in 1943 and featured a rare liquid-cooled Ha-40 engine among Japanese fighters. The Id model's elongated nose allowed installation of 20mm cannon armament with supplementary machine guns, and its larger production run makes it a frequently modelled subject.
The Hien was deployed in roles that required good high-altitude performance, including interceptions of long-range bombers like the B29. The 1/72 rendition reproduces essential shapes and surface detail while remaining compact for display in a collection of historic aircraft.
The Tamiya 60789 kit offers tidy component fit and clear assembly steps with recommended Tamiya Color paints for period-accurate finishes. Enhance the model with fine panel washes and subtle weathering. Once finished, the model works well on a small plinth or as part of a themed vignette.
