This 1/48 scale kit represents the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden, labelled Jack by Allied intelligence. Tamiya delivers a tidy parts layout and engraved panel detail aimed at modellers seeking a historically accurate static replica of Japans interceptor design.
Development began in 1939 to meet the demand for a fast climbing interceptor. A key difficulty was choosing an engine that balanced power and dependability. The air-cooled Kasei engine was selected for its reliability, despite increasing frontal area and drag.
To improve aerodynamic efficiency, engineers adopted a longer propeller shaft and a slimmer cowling, and installed a forced-cooling fan. The airframe used a tapered, spindle-like fuselage and included Fowler flaps to aid takeoff and combat agility.
Once early vibration and sightline issues were resolved, the Raiden performed effectively with squadrons such as the 302nd Air Group at Atsugi. It helped defend key areas late in the conflict and achieved a number of shootdowns, although its earlier campaign results, for example in the Mariana engagements, were mixed.
