History of the Focke-Wulf Fw190 A-3

The Fw190A-3, designed at Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau under Kurt Tank, became a prominent German fighter in World War II. Intended as a partner to the Messerschmitt Bf109, it was powered by the dependable BMW 801 radial engine and was noted for its handling and combat role over the Channel in 1941.

Operational Role and Technical Notes

Commissioned in 1941, the A-3 established itself against many Allied types of the period. With the BMW 801Dg delivering around 1,700hp, it maintained strong performance until newer Allied fighters arrived, and its armament of six machine guns provided a heavy short-range strike capability.

Model Construction and Accuracy

The 1/48 scale Tamiya kit faithfully renders the Fw190A-3s form with clean detail and fitting parts. The layout reproduces major features such as the engine cowling and gun positions, making it suitable for both museum-style displays and enhanced custom builds.

Cockpit mouldings are well defined and respond well to careful painting and drybrushing, which bring out instrument detail and interior textures.
Once built and painted, the model makes an excellent addition to historical aviation displays thanks to its accurate outline and detailing at 1/48 scale.
