The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden began as a conversion of the N1K1 "Kyofu" floatplane, developed privately by Kawanishi Aircraft and later adopted by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its maiden flight in December 1942 introduced a fighter that combined innovative structure with practical combat performance.
Equipped with the Nakajima Homare engine, the N1K1-J offered strong handling for its era. Its oversized propeller led to special landing gear solutions, such as telescopic legs, to suit the midwing arrangement. Around 1,000 Shiden fighters were produced and they saw action in locations including the Philippines, Formosa and Okinawa.
