The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray occupies a unique place as the U.S. Navy's only operational delta-wing interceptor. Born from post-war aerodynamic advances, the design process began in 1947 and the prototype flew in January 1951, featuring a steep 50-degree wing sweep and competitive speed credentials for its time.
Production aircraft took to the air in June 1954 and entered service by April 1956. It was deployed during late 1950s tensions but did not engage in combat. The Tamiya 61055 1/48 kit offers a faithful static model that highlights the Skyray's characteristic planform for museum-style display or a collection shelf.
