Douglas A-1J Skyraider: Iconic Postwar Strike Aircraft

The Douglas A-1J Skyraider, often called Dauntless II, AD, A-1 Able Dog and Spad, enjoyed a service life approaching 30 years. Development began in June 1944 but the type missed World War II and entered combat during the Korean War from 1950. More than 3,200 airframes were built in various versions, with the AD-6 being the most numerous.

The last batch, the AD-7 reclassified as A-1J, incorporated stronger wing spars and the most robust landing gear of the series. With its Wright R-3350-26WB engine the Skyraider could reach about 285 knots. It saw extensive action in Vietnam, notably with the 14th and 56th Special Operations Wings, equipped for missions using bombs, cannon and rockets.
