P-47D Thunderbolt Bubble Top - Classic wartime fighter

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, nicknamed the "Bubbletop", is recognised for its sturdy design during the Second World War. Its first flight in May 1941 led to widespread use, backed by the R-2800 engine and a heavy armament layout of eight 12.7mm machine guns.

How the kit reproduces the Bubble Top variant

Tamiya's 1/48 kit recreates the Bubble Top conversion that improved pilot vision, and accurately portrays the aircrafts large fuselage and engine cowling. The parts allow a faithful replica suited to display shelves.

What is included in the box

  • Scale: 1/48
  • Length: 230mm
  • Width: 259mm

  • Choices for open or closed flap settings and alternative intercooler air outlet parts
  • Accessory loadouts include 500 lb bombs, rocket launcher fittings and drop tanks

This compact but detailed kit offers both historical fidelity and flexible assembly options, making it a fine choice for collectors and scale aircraft enthusiasts.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/48
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly: Requires glue
  • Paint: Not included
Yes. With overall dimensions of 230mm by 259mm, the completed model fits typical display cases and shelf spaces for 1/48 scale aircraft.
The decal sheet provides two different marking options, suitable for representing specific squadron liveries or general historical schemes.
Beginners can attempt the build but should expect to use glue and paints and to spend time on small parts. Novices may prefer practice on simpler kits first.
