Commissioned into service in June 1941, the P-38 used a central nacelle for the crew and armament while its twin engines delivered strong performance. The F series, from April 1942, carried pylons for 150 gallon drop tanks to extend mission range, and later G types featured improved engines with options for 300 gallon tanks.
