The Tamiya 70224 Swimming Dolphin belongs to Tamiya's STEM series and provides a clear, hands-on way to study simple mechanisms by constructing a working model. The finished dolphin swims using a compact underwater gearbox and demonstrates basic motion converted from motor rotation.
The assembled dolphin is 182mm long, 100mm wide and 60mm high. A submarine mini motor powered by one AAA battery (not included) runs a crank drive that moves the tail fin in an up-and-down motion, propelling the model while the head gives a lifelike bob.
Panels and fins are produced from resilient polypropylene (PP), allowing the parts to flex and recreate a natural stroke. The kit also includes a buoyant float with a suction cup to help the model stay level in water.
This model is intended as an accessible introduction to mechanical construction and is suitable for younger participants with guidance. Altering the fin placement changes the swim direction, which is a simple way to demonstrate cause and effect.
