Fine engraving for scale modelling

The Tamiya 74148 Fine Engraving Needle gives a precise 20 degree point for producing clean engraved lines on miniature parts. It is useful for scribing panel lines, adding fine accents and refining small details on models.

Dimensions and holder fit

Finished in cemented carbide for durability, the needle is 25mm long with a 2mm shank diameter. Compatibility includes Tamiya's Engraving Blade Holder (Item 74139) and common pin vises such as Fine Pin Vise D (Item 74050) and D-R (Item 74112).

Scribing technique for consistent results

Work with a steady hand and build groove depth through successive light passes to avoid slips. This method keeps line width consistent across both straight runs and flowing curves.

Kit storage for blades and tips

The small storage case holds up to ten needles and has room for separately sold replacement engraving blades, helping to keep your tools organised between jobs.

Carbide maintains its edge far longer than standard steel bits, but actual life depends on material and usage. Light, controlled use will maximise tip life.
You can scribe painted parts, but take care not to gouge through multiple layers. Practice on scrap to set depth before working on finished pieces.
If the tip chips replace the needle. Keep spare needles or blades in the case so you can swap them quickly without interrupting your build.
