Produce Natural-Looking Grass with Tamiya 87111

Tamiya 87111 Texture Paint in Grass Green is a water-based paste formulation that includes 5mm long coloured fibres to recreate grassy ground on scale layouts. For optimal results apply it on top of Diorama Texture Paint (Soil Effect) to build realistic terrain depth.

Application, Coverage and Dry Times

A single 40ml bottle covers approximately a B4 area when applied in one coat. Drying depends on ambient conditions, commonly 3-4 hours in warmer settings and about 4-5 hours in cooler settings. The low-odour, water-based mix is easy to clean from tools before it sets. Use a spatula or an older brush to spread the texture without damaging fine new bristles.

Colour Options and Surface Treatment

You can alter the hue slightly by blending in small amounts of Tamiya acrylics. After the texture cures, enamel washes and subtle dry brushing will bring out highlights and shadow. This product should not be used with an airbrush as the fibres and paste can block and damage the equipment.

Practical Notes on Look and Use

The texture paint simulates a grassy carpet rather than separate blades, so include that effect in your scenic planning. Its water-based character keeps handling neat and suitable for indoor modelling tables.

Apply a base coat of Diorama Texture Paint (Soil Effect) or similar to provide adhesion and depth before adding the grass texture.
The 5mm fibres give a convincing carpeted grass look but do not replicate single blades at very close inspection.
No, thinning or airbrushing is not recommended as the paste and fibres will clog airbrush parts.
Use enamel washes and light dry brushing over the dried texture to pick out highlights and add natural variation.
