Simulate Worn Finishes with Tamiya 87225

Tamiya's 87225 Chipping Liquid is targeted at modellers who want realistic paint loss and wear on their kits. It performs well on armour, aircraft and sci-fi subjects to recreate aged surfaces.

Stepwise Application Procedure

Follow these steps to achieve authentic chipping results on your models:

  1. Base Coat Application: Start by painting your model with a base color using Tamiya lacquer paints.
  2. Apply Chipping Liquid: Use an airbrush or brush to apply a thin layer of the Chipping Liquid. Ensure the application is light for optimal results.
  3. Hull Color Layer: Once the Chipping Liquid has dried, paint over it with your chosen hull color using Tamiya acrylic paints.
  4. Activate Chipping Effect: Apply water to the painted areas to soften the Chipping Liquid.
  5. Reveal Weathering: Gently peel off the hull color paint with tools like a toothpick to reveal the base color underneath.

Note: The hull color paint will not peel off once fully dried, so timing is crucial in this process.

Product Information

  • Volume: 40ml square bottle
  • Water-based formula
  • Tools can be cleaned with water
  • Not suitable for use over gloss or metallic paints
  • Brushes are not included
No, avoid using it over gloss or metallic finishes as the water-based chipping layer will not lift those surfaces reliably.
Wait until the Chipping Liquid is fully dry, then apply water and start lifting the topcoat. If you wait too long after topcoat drying the paint will be harder to remove.
Fine tools like a toothpick, soft brush or silicone sculpting tool let you control chip size and placement without damaging the surrounding finish.
