The North American P-51D Mustang, brought into service in May 1944, employed a laminar flow wing to cut drag and was fitted with the supercharged Packard Merlin V1650-7 engine. The teardrop canopy boosted pilot visibility and the aircraft was armed with six 13.7mm guns. When fitted with auxiliary drop tanks the Mustang could escort long-range bomber missions.
During the war the U.S. automotive sector shifted to military output, producing vehicles such as the 4-door staff car, often recognisable by rear-hinged doors and a V8 engine. Including the staff car in this kit allows modellers to stage convincing WWII officer or ground crew scenes.
