The Hawk Mk.66 is a specialised variant of the Hawk introduced in 1974 for training and light attack duties. It uses the Adour 151 turbofan and has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,360kg. With an 11 metre fuselage and the capacity to carry roughly 3 tonnes of stores, it could be equipped with AIM-9L Sidewinders and a 30mm gun pod for operational flexibility.
Switzerland adopted the Hawk Mk.66 as an advanced trainer, receiving 20 aircraft between 1990 and 2002. The type proved reliable and manoeuvrable, supporting both pilot instruction and limited combat tasks.
Tamiya's 1/48 kit faithfully reproduces the Hawk Mk.66 profile, producing a model 242mm long and 197mm tall when built. The kit supplies photo-etched parts for cockpit instruments and mirrors, plus accessories such as a gun pod, drop tank and Sidewinder missiles to complete authentic loadouts. Builders can choose between open or closed canopy and airbrake positions.
