The Lightning developed beyond its initial interceptor part into a tremendously capable assault fighter and reconnaissance platform. first production Lightning, the F.1, travelled in October 1959, and deliveries started to summer time time of 1960. It had a robust radar and heat-seeking Firestreak missiles. A follow-on variation, the F.1A, had air-refueling ability and a UHF radio. The F.2 variant starred in 1961, and had better range, rate and roof, a liquid-oxygen respiration system the pilot, a steerable nosewheel, fully-variable afterburners, and improved electronics. The F.3, featuring two 16,360-pound thrust Avon products, a far more impressive square-tip fin, Red-Top missiles, although the capability of carrying two big over-wing gas pods, joined up with solution in 1964.
