The English Electric Lightning stands out as a classic British supersonic interceptor known for its exceptional climb rate and distinctive layout. The Trumpeter 01634 model recreates the Lightning in 1:72 scale for enthusiasts wanting a museum-style subject in a display-friendly size.
Built as an interceptor, the Lightning was later adapted for strike and reconnaissance missions. The first production F.1 flew in October 1959 and carried radar plus Firestreak missiles. The F.1A and F.2 introduced mid-air refuelling capability, improved avionics and a steerable nosewheel to improve handling on the ground.
The kit contains 72 plastic parts and 4 clear pieces for the canopy and missiles, moulded in light grey across 5 sprues. Once assembled the model is 233.13mm long with a 148.06mm wingspan. Decals represent the Lightning F.1A XM 181 in RAF 1971 markings and will require careful application for best authenticity.
