The Douglas SBD Dauntless plunge bomber became a mainstay for the Navy's atmosphere fleet inside the Pacific, aided by the cheapest loss ratio of any U.S. carrier-based aircraft. Douglas delivered a complete of 5,936 SBD/A-24s between 1940 and end of manufacturing in July 1944.
