Trumpeter 1:700 HMS Zulu (G18) 1941 Kit Overview

HMS Zulu was a Tribal-class destroyer launched in 1937 by A. Stephens & Sons in Glasgow, launched with boilers and funnels already in place and gaining the nickname of a 'lucky ship'. She entered service in 1938 and later took part in actions such as the hunt for the battleship Bismarck.

Operational Service and Modifications

During her career HMS Zulu served in the Mediterranean, at one time based at Malta. In 1941 she underwent a refit at Falmouth where radar was fitted and depth charge throwers were repositioned. In 1942 she was hit by Italian shore batteries and bombed, leading to her sinking near Alexandria.

Scale Modelling Notes

The Trumpeter 1:700 kit models HMS Zulu with careful attention to key fittings like the HF direction finding arrays and twin 2-pounder guns, making it suitable for collectors who prefer historically accurate small-scale builds.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1:700
  • Length: 164.4mm
  • Width: 15.9mm
  • Height: 47.5mm
  • Total Plastic Parts: 92 pcs
  • Includes 5 sprues, upper hull, lower full, waterline plate, and deck
  • Decal Marking: HMS Zulu (F18) 1941
This is best tackled by modellers with intermediate to advanced experience, due to small components and the need for precise assembly and painting.
The kit supplies the parts listed and decals for HMS Zulu 1941; alternative detailing parts like photo-etch are not included but can be added separately.
Use a fine brush for touch-ups and seal with a light coat of clear varnish to protect painted areas and decals without obscuring fine detail.
